Take Your Kids on a Trip to See the Country
Many Americans take an RV trip only when they reach retirement age. But did you know that you don't have to wait this long to see the country on a motorhome? There are a lot of companies and private owners who are willing to rent out their motorhomes at affordable prices. So if you've been dying to experience the RV lifestyle, now is the time to take action.
But if you're traveling in RVs with kids, know that the idea of being in a vehicle for many days can give kids much discomfort. In effect, this will give you and the adults that you'll be traveling with much discomfort. So before you take an RV trip with kids, have a plan of action.
Tips to Ensure a Successful RV Adventure
Aside from the basics (such as studying your route or checking the engine), here are some tips to ensure that your RV adventure with kids is a success.
1. Plan your activities.
The attention span of kids, as you know, is very short. They get bored easily, and if gets too hot outside, they can be whiny and cranky. So try to excite them with the activities in store for them. Days before the trip, show the kids some pictures of a brook, river, or even wild animals that you'll be expecting to see during your tip. This will give them something to look forward to. And when they start complaining about the hotness or dampness of the weather, you can always remind them of what they will do next.
2. Bring a first-aid kit, and know how to use what it contains.
Some kids can be clumsy and are prone to accidents. The next hospital may be miles away from where you're stationed, so know how to give first-aid procedures in case your kids get injured. Anticipate the possible types of injuries so that you'll know what types of first-aid medicines to bring.
3. Educate your kids.
Kids can easily get lost in the woods (or in unfamiliar places). So before you camp out at a certain place, give your kids some reminders. Ask them to stay close to you at all times, or go only to places where an adult can supervise them. You can also teach them what to do when they think they are lost.
Here's a tip. You can give each of your kids a whistle, so in case they sense something dangerous, they can just blow it to signal for your rescue. If you're bringing more than 5 kids, assign each of them a pair so they can look out for each other.
4. Always perform a headcount.
This is a good technique especially if you're traveling with a number of kids. It is much quicker instead of calling out names to check if nobody was left behind. You can perform a headcount as many times as you want, but always count before leaving a stop.
